Alcohol Denat, or denatured alcohol, is an organic compound used in skincare for its astringent, refreshing, and purifying functional properties.

Where does it come from?

Denatured alcohol is produced by fermenting sugar starches, such as those from beets or sugar cane. It can also be synthesized, though OLIVEDA exclusively uses alcohol derived from natural fermentation processes.

What are the benefits?

  • Evaporating: Evaporates quickly, minimizing the moisture content of the skin and hair.
  • Refreshing: Provides a cooling sensation upon application.
  • Purifying: Exhibits some purifying properties, to maintain product hygiene.
  • Penetration: Facilitates the absorption of active ingredients, like retinol and vitamin C, into the skin.
  • Astringent: Temporarily tightens the skin.
  • Antifoaming: Minimizes the tendency of products to foam when shaken.

Alcohol Denat is used, for example, in H22 Hair and Scalp Treatment and S73 Organic Hand Sanitizer from OLIVEDA.  Its inclusion allows the product to evaporate quickly, leaving behind the aroma or active ingredients. It contributes to the absorption and penetration of other active ingredients and serves as a preservative.  It promotes the deposition of pigments, such as in foundations, and contributes to the comfort of application.
