Glycerin.
What is it?
Glycerin is a naturally occurring compound, also known as glycerol. In skincare formulations, glycerin is widely known for its role as a humectant. It attracts moisture from the air into the top layer of skin, and due to its low molecular weight, will continue to draw moisture to the deeper layers of the dermis, helping to maintain hydration and skin balance.

Glycerin is a naturally occurring compound, also known as glycerol. In skincare formulations, glycerin is widely known for its role as a humectant. Where does it come from?
Glycerin is found in all-natural lipids (fats) in both animals and plants. It can be produced through the hydrolysis of fats or the fermentation of sugars and is derived from plants, such as rapeseed or sunflower. The production process adheres to the principles of green chemistry, making modern glycerin both biodegradable and renewable.
What are the benefits?
What are the benefits?
- Hydration: As a powerful humectant, glycerin draws moisture from the air and deeper layers of the skin to the outer layer, keeping the skin well-hydrated.
- Improved Skin Barrier Function: Glycerin helps fill the intercellular matrix, strengthening the skin’s natural barrier against environmental irritants and moisture loss.
- Protection: It forms a protective layer on the skin, preventing dehydration and shielding against external aggressors.
- Accelerated Wound Repair: It has been shown to speed up the healing process of minor wounds by promoting moisture retention and cell repair.
- Skin Conditioning: Regular use of glycerin improves skin texture, making it softer and more supple.
- Anti-Aging: By maintaining skin hydration, glycerin helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Relief for Dry Skin: Glycerin is effective in alleviating symptoms of dry skin, including flakiness and tightness, and may also help manage conditions like psoriasis.
