Where does it come from?
Maltodextrin is derived from plant-based starches, with the specific source varying by region. In the United States, corn or potato starch is most commonly used, while in Asia, rice is the preferred raw material. In Europe, wheat or barley serves as the primary source. At Oliveda, ours is derived from potatoes. The production process involves the enzymatic or acidic hydrolysis of starch, where the large polysaccharide chains are broken down into smaller dextrins, resulting in maltodextrin.
Hydrating: It acts as an absorbent, drawing moisture from the environment and making it available for skin cells, helping to maintain hydration.
Protective Barrier: It creates a protective barrier on the surface of the skin or hair, shielding it from environmental factors and helping to retain moisture.
Emulsion Stabilizer: Maltodextrin helps to stabilize emulsions, ensuring that oil and water-based ingredients remain well-mixed and the product maintains its consistency.
Conditioning: It conditions both skin and hair, providing a soft, smooth feel and improving the effectiveness and overall sensory experience of the product.
Oil Controlling: Its moisture-absorbing properties make it valuable in formulations designed to control oil and maintain a matte finish.
How is it used in our products?
Maltodextrin is used, for example, in F83 HT & Vitamin C Face Serum and B13 Anti Aging Hand Cream from OLIVEDA. Included for its ability to create a protective moisture barrier, shielding skin from environmental factors, and for its skin hydrating and conditioning properties.
